About 4 years ago, I suddenly started to notice I had moderate hearing loss and along with it a ringing noise in my ears. Both of them. Over the past 4 years I have been on a journey to understand this now continuous noise that I hear and also to cure myself of it.
Please do not follow my course of actions without consulting your medical doctor.
Let me start off by saying that I have not cured myself of tinnitus nor do I know if I ever will. What I can tell you is that I believe that I will cure myself AND I am also accepting of the fact that I may not. How can I hold such polar opposite views? I think this is the key to success. To resolve to succeed AND to be able to exist with failures.
My approach has consisted of a number of integrated techniques or tools that I will only touch one here.
1. Believe without a doubt that you will be cured.
2. Be okay with knowing that the ringing may never stop.
3. Your body is an amazing system that can heal itself so you need to create an environment for your body to do that.
4. Meditation - one thing that I often do is I meditate on the noise. I literally focus on the noise. I know I am succeeding when I feel myself fall into myself towards the noise. It is amazing what you notice about the noise and where it is coming from. Does it change in tone? Is there a rhythm? What is the point of meditating? I think it helps you and your mind understand where the issue may be. Also I find it at times relaxing and I pass out. At other times it makes it harder to fall asleep as I notice the noise even more. This is where I then practice blocking out the noise and relaxing to fall asleep. Hard to explain without practice.
5. Craniosacral Therapy or CST - does this work? Not sure. A lot of people say it is nonsense. I find it relaxing. I am open to any ideas. I saw a CST person once. I think it did something. I practice it on myself. It is very relaxing if anything else. It also keeps me more aligned with #1 above. Read more on the web about CST.
6. Herbs and minerals. I take Gingko Biloba and Zinc. I have tried GB before and then gave it up. However, I have returned to it and have been taking it for about 3.5 months. Again not sure if it is helping. I think it is. I was also taking high levels of B12. However, I began to notice my poop was green and also I seemed to get acne. I did some research on the web and developed a hypothesis that my issues were related to the B12 so I stopped taking it....maybe I could have just reduced the dose.
7. Mouth guard - I wear a mouth guard device because I clench and grind my teeth at night. I have read that TMJ can cause tinnitus so I use a mouthguard. I only really started using it regularly. I think it can only help and atleast it is protecting my teeth. I wear a mouth guard that fastens to my bottom front teeth. I do not wear those full mouth guards that look like the ones athletes wear. I cannot stand those ones.
8. Do not be obsessed by the noise. You know what I mean. Change your perspective.
Okay so I was a little vague on some of this stuff. It is a journey and you will discover your own way. I will write more about this if I see people are interested.
No one seems to be able to give a firm answer as to what causes tinnitus. I have read things like it is caused by damaged to the hairs in your ear and so the brain replaces the lack of noise with noise, TMJ, etc.
From my own observations and deep meditations....listening to my body I think it is related to my nervous system. I think it is partly related to irritation of nerves. What I am hearing may be my nerves being irritated. In some cases I think injuries for example to lower back nerves can cause signals to be sent throughout the body. You just hear them in your ears.
Do not give up however do not be obsessed by it. When I cure myself I will let you know and I will cure myself.
